🦟 Why Are Dengue Cases Rising in Hyderabad?

Every monsoon season, Hyderabad sees a sharp increase in dengue cases. Stagnant rainwater in construction sites, open drains, and uncovered containers become breeding grounds for the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the primary carrier of the dengue virus. Urbanization, improper waste disposal, and changing climate patterns add to the risk.

According to recent reports, the city records thousands of cases every year, especially between July and November, putting a burden on hospitals and families alike.

🔍 What is Dengue Fever?

Dengue is a viral infection transmitted through the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito. Unlike other mosquitoes, these bite during the daytime, mostly early morning and before dusk.

There is no specific antiviral treatment for dengue. Early diagnosis, hydration, and supportive care are crucial to avoid complications.

🚨 Key Symptoms to Watch Out For

Dengue symptoms usually appear 4–10 days after the mosquito bite. They can vary from mild flu-like signs to severe, life-threatening complications.

Common symptoms:

  • Sudden high fever (104°F or higher)

  • Severe headache (especially behind the eyes)

  • Joint and muscle pain (often called “breakbone fever”)

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Skin rash (appearing 2–5 days after fever onset)

  • Mild bleeding (nosebleeds, gum bleeding)

Severe Dengue (Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever):

  • Severe abdominal pain

  • Persistent vomiting

  • Bleeding under the skin

  • Difficulty breathing

  • Sudden drop in blood pressure

If you or your child develop any of these warning signs, seek medical help immediately.

⚠️ Who is at Higher Risk?

  • Children and elderly people

  • Pregnant women

  • People with weakened immunity

  • Patients with pre-existing conditions like diabetes or hypertension

How to Protect Your Family from Dengue

Prevention is always better than cure. Here’s what I recommend as a general physician:

🦟 1. Stop Mosquito Breeding

  • Clear stagnant water from pots, buckets, tyres, coolers, tanks.

  • Change water in flower vases every other day.

  • Cover water storage containers tightly.

👕 2. Avoid Mosquito Bites

  • Wear long sleeves and pants, especially during dawn and dusk.

  • Use mosquito repellents on exposed skin.

  • Sleep under mosquito nets, especially for babies and elderly.

🏠 3. Make Your Home Mosquito-Free

  • Use screens on doors and windows.

  • Use mosquito coils or vaporizers indoors.

  • Keep surroundings clean and dry.

💧 4. Stay Hydrated & Get Checked Early

  • If fever lasts more than two days with severe headache or body pain, see a doctor.

  • Drink plenty of fluids — dehydration worsens dengue.

  • Avoid self-medication. Do not take aspirin or ibuprofen without doctor’s advice as they may increase bleeding risk.

🩺 Final Thoughts

Dengue is preventable if we take simple, consistent precautions. As a general physician, I urge everyone in Hyderabad to stay vigilant during the monsoon season. Early diagnosis and timely care can save lives.

If you or your family show any symptoms, don’t hesitate — visit your nearest hospital or consult your doctor immediately.

Stay safe, stay healthy!
